Unlike rubber waterstop strips, waterstop steel plates are primarily made from Q235 steel and are more frequently employed in construction projects. Their working principle is based on the fact that the joint between new and old concrete typically represents the weakest link in waterproofing. By installing the waterstop steel plate at this critical location, any water attempting to seep inward along the construction joint will be blocked by the steel plate, effectively preventing further leakage and achieving a reliable waterproofing effect. Even in cases of severe seepage, this approach can significantly lengthen the water’s path, thereby enhancing the overall waterproof performance. Installing waterstop steel plates on exterior basement walls serves as an effective measure to prevent leakage at the interface between new and old concrete during the pouring process—particularly when compaction is insufficient—thus improving the overall durability and reliability of the waterproofing system.
The function of steel plate waterstops
The joint between new and old concrete is called a construction joint, which serves as a weak point in the waterproofing of impermeable concrete. When this joint lies below the groundwater level, it becomes particularly susceptible to leakage. However, after installing steel plate waterstops, even if water seeps through the cracks at the interface between the new and old concrete, the presence of the waterstop prevents further leakage. Cold-rolled steel sheets are commonly used as the material for steel plate waterstops. This is because cold-rolled sheets have uniform thickness, whereas the thickness of hot-rolled sheets typically does not meet standardized specifications. The thickness usually ranges from 2mm or 3mm, and the length is often fabricated into 3-meter or 6-meter sections. Among these, 3 meters is the more common length for ease of transportation.
